Music is the universal language of communication.

At the risk of sounding hyperbolic, it would be an understatement to say that music is something that is organically accepted and does not need a dialect to be understood or appreciated. Humans have a very simple relationship with music. As a matter of fact, from the moment a baby is conceived, its reflexes and responses are guided by the sounds it hears in the mother’s womb.

An article in the U.S. National Institute of Health states the following:

“One of the differences between the developed brains of Homo sapiens and those of the great apes is the increase in area allocated to processing auditory information. … The ear is always open and, unlike vision and the eyes or the gaze, sound cannot readily be averted. From the rhythmic beating within and with the mother’s body for the fetus and young infant, to the primitive drum-like beating of sticks on wood and hand clapping of our adolescent and adult proto-speaking ancestors, the growing infant is surrounded by and responds to rhythm.”

Like every other skill and art-form that we possess, music too is an ingrained part of our psychological development. But in most cases, this skill is raw and uninhibited. Most people use their liking and appreciation for music in the most basic form. And that is to listen to music, to enjoy the rhythms and the songs and to cultivate favorites, likes and dislikes along the course of enjoying the music.

In this way, music becomes recreational.

But there are people who wish to learn and understand the intricacies of music. They may be interested in a musical instrument or another form of music. Sometimes, this passion begins at a very young age. Kids and children start showing keen interest in playing certain musical instruments, they start wanting to learn and know more about it. And at this age, the yearning to know and learn more is most definitely a good sign.

There is never a right age to learn what you do and do what you love. But if at a very young age, your kid is showing deep interest in a particular art form and wants to learn more, as a parent, you must take that into thorough consideration.

Of the many musical instruments that can be introduced to your kids, a piano is the most versatile and universal of them all.

Learning piano at a young age has a lot of benefits for the kids. Let’s list them out!

  1. Learning piano at a young age helps improve the memory of your child. It also helps them maintain an intellectual level as they grow into adults. As little as six months of training with the piano is known to enhance the understanding and comprehension levels of the kids. This retains even when they grow up.
  2. Learning a piano will expand your kid’s musical knowledge and aural skills. They will develop a keen taste and understanding of music that only comes with learning and practice.
  3. Playing a piano urges your kid to engage various senses at once. The fingers are used to play the tune, the eyes locate the keys, the ears place the notes, the feet operate the pedal, and the brain makes sure all this happens in unison. All these happen while also making sure that the pressure on the keys is just about right and know what key plays which note without looking down at the piano. Learning how to play a piano develops sharp focus in kids and helps them multitask like a master.
  4. Learning how to play a piano will make your kid happy and joyful. It will also help reduce their anxiety levels and urge them to be stress-free. Getting good at playing with time will also increase the confidence level in your kid and make him very healthy, mentally.
  5. When we think about the physical aspects, learning the piano has a lot of good effects. It helps strengthen the hand-eye coordination in the kids which is very vital for playing the piano. Playing the piano also helps in increasing general speed and dexterity of the kid while also helping enhance their fine motor skills. As an adult, playing the piano will help them adapt to typing on the computer keyboard faster and that is an underrated skill.
  6. Learning the piano at a young age helps kids build a social bond with their peers. Especially if they are meeting or communicating outside of school. It also helps them regulate their emotions better.
  7. The most important benefit of learning the piano at a young age, in my opinion, is that kids who get used to this instrument and learn it very young grow up to be very good listeners. They also become respectful adults who are aware of cultural diversities but also embrace them all with ease.
  8. Learning to play the piano helps your kid understand music better. It helps them the most if they want to compose music in the future.

Learning how to play the piano at a young age will ensure complete growth for your child. It makes them physically, emotionally and mentally stable. I urge you to start piano classes for your kids as soon as possible because I see my kid thriving at them, no kidding!

With time, I see better focus and concentration in her. I have also witnessed empathy, compassion and a different level of confidence in her as she gains confidence and mastery over the piano. Learning the piano does not have to be tedious unless you have competent teachers and trainers. Make sure you have the best resources at hand for the same.
